The Medway Fair Trader Scheme is a scheme
operated by Medway Trading Standards to improve consumer
protection. To ensure the high standards demanded by Medway
Trading Standards are met Medway Trading Standards vet all
prospective members before deciding whether or not to allow them
entry into the scheme. Membership of the scheme is voluntary but
by joining, a business demonstrates a commitment to customer
care and fair-trading.
Customers can check with Medway Trading Standards to see
which businesses are members of the scheme before purchasing
goods or services.
Benefits for the consumer. The customer is assured:
The business complies with the law.
Contract terms are fair, written in plain English and clearly
legible.
The business operates an effective customer complaints
procedure.
Customer’s permission will always be sought before carrying
out any repair or servicing work.
The assessment procedure in most cases involves an inspection
of the business premises, procedures and products and may also:
Require the production of customer details in order to seek
references for the business
Carry out criminal record and county court judgement checks
Consult the Trading Standards database, to check against any
previous consumers complaints regarding the applicants business.
